2014 Squads

See below for all of the latest information of the squads that will be featuring for the 2014 Indian Premier League.

DELHI DAREDEVILS

Owned by the infrastructure giant, GMR Group, Delhi Daredevils are one of the most underachieving sides in the IPL. They have been a part of IPL since 2008, but never have come to winning it, despite having some of the best T20 players in the world play for the over the last seven seasons. The 2014 season was another disaster for the Delhi team as they came last in the IPL standings, despite having big names like Kevin Pietersen, Ross Taylor, JP Duminy and former India coach Gary Kirsten managing them. Surely, the great city of Delhi deserves better from its team!

The Squad:

RAJASTHAN ROYALS

Rajasthan Royals have always been over achievers, right from the first IPL of 2008, which they won in great style, led superbly by one of the greatest cricketers of all time, the Aussie legend Shane Warne. Rajasthan Royals have a tradition of picking talented but unheralded young Indian players, and inspiring the best from them, making them perform far beyond anybody’s expectations. Some of the exciting talent who made a name at the Royals include Ravindra Jadeja, Stuart Binny,  Sanju Samson and Ajinkya Rahane – all Indian players now. But the soul of Rajasthan Royals has been the brilliant Shane Watson, and they have had Rahul Dravid leading them as well.

The Squad:

Owner: Shilpa Shetty and Others

Mentor: Rahul Dravid
Captain: Shane Watson
Wicketkeeper: Sanju Samson, Dishant Yagnik

KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS

The Kolkata Knight Riders, also known as KKR, are owned by the biggest celebrity in India, the Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, and for a long time, that was their only claim to fame as they underachieved for the most part. But signing India opener Gautam Gambhir and making him the captain of the side changed things dramatically for the Kolkata side, as they won their first IPL in 2012. There were massive celebrations in Kolkata when this happened. Proving that the 2012 win wasn’t a fluke, KKR won the IPL again in 2014 and are the reigning IPL champions. KKR are a brilliantly marketed club and have Sunil Narine, perhaps the world’s best T20 bowler.

The Squad:

Coach: Trevor Bayliss
Captain: Gautam Gambhir
Wicketkeeper: Manvinder Bisla, Robin Uthappa

ROYAL CHALLENGERS BANGALORE

Perhaps the sexiest team in the IPL with three of the most dangerous batsmen in the world in Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers, the Royal Challengers Bangalore have also been remarkably successful. They did falter a bit in the 2014 season, and much of this has been attributed to the business failure of their owner, the flamboyant former billionaire, Vijay Mallya.  RCB look lost currently because of the problems faced by their owner, which has had a highly negative effect on what was once a club that epitomized the glitz and the glamour of IPL.  But they do have the players, and it is hoped that the ownership problems will be sorted out next season in 2015.

The Squad:

Owner: Vijay Mallya
Coach: Daniel Vettori
Captain: Virat Kohli
Wicketkeeper: AB de Villiers, Parthiv Patel
Batsmen: Yuvraj Singh, Nic Maddinson, Vijay Zol, Tanmay Mishra, Sandeep Warrier, Yogesh Takawale
Allrounders: Chris Gayle, Albie Morkel
Bowlers: Muttiah Muralitharan, Varun Aaron, Mitchell Starc, Ashok Dinda, Ravi Rampaul, Abu Nechim, Yuzvendra Chahal, Shadab Jakati, Harshal Patel, Sachin Rana

CHENNAI SUPER KINGS

Easily the most consistent team in IPL history, Chennai Super Kings,  captained by the Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni have been remarkably good. They have been finalists in five of the seven IPL seasons and semi-finalists in the other two. In Dwayne Smith, Brendon McCullum and Suresh Raina, the Super Kings have a solid top three. This gets even better with Faf du Plessis, MS Dhoni, Dwayne Bravo and Ravindra Jadeja to follow, making them the most powerful batting unit in the IPL. The only surprise is that such a team has won the IPL only once.  Perhaps that’s because of their relatively weak bowling.

The Squad:

Owner: N. Srinivasan, India Cements
Coach: Stephen Fleming
Captain/Wicketkeeper: MS Dhoni
Wicketkeeper: Brendon McCullum
Batsmen: Dwayn Smith, Baba Aparajith, Ronit More, Suresh Raina, Vijay Shankar
Allrounders: Dwayn Bravo, Faf du Plessis, John Hastings, Ravindra Jadeja, Mithun Manhas
Bowlers: Ashwin, Badree, Matt Henry, Ben Hilfenhaus, Pawan Negi, Ashish Nehra, Ishwar Pandey, Mohit Sharma

KINGS XI PUNJAB

The Kings XI Punjab were more famous for having one of the prettiest and vivacious owners in Bollywood actress Priety Zinta than for their performances in the middle. They have never won the IPL, but in 2014, they came very close and were worthy finalists.  Kings XI Punjab have the most destructive batsman in cricket at the moment, Glenn Maxwell. It is here that Maxwell has made such a name for himself. The other young international star making his mark in the Punjab team is the talented South African David Miller. Former Indian player Virendra Sehwag has got a new lease of life at Kings XI as well. But the club has always had financial constraints.

The Squad:

Owner: Preity Zinta, Ness Wadia
Coach: Sanjay Bangar
Captain: George Bailey
Wicketkeeper: Wriddhiman Saha
Batsmen: Virender Sehwag, Shaun Marsh, Gurkeerat Singh Mann, Mandeep Singh, David Miller, Cheteshwar Pujara, Shardul Thakur, Manan Vohra
Allrounders: Glenn Maxwell, Thisara Perera
Bowlers: Mitchell Johnson, Beuran Hendricks, Murali Kartik, Lakshmipathy Balaji, Rishi Dhawan, Anureet Singh, Parvinder Awana, Karanveer Singh, Akshar Patel, Sandeep Sharma, Shivam Sharma

MUMBAI INDIANS

Mumbai Indians, owned by the richest Indian alive Mukesh Ambani, were the team to beat in the IPL when they had the legendary Sachin Tendulkar playing for them. But since Tendulkar’s retirement last year, the team’s performance has flagged and interest in it has gone down as well. Their last victory in the IPL was in 2013, which was also Tendulkar’s last season. The last season was a disaster for the Mumbai Indians as they utterly failed to defend their championship. Rohit Sharma is the best player in the Mumbai Indians squad, and he is not even a regular member of the Indian team. This in a nutshell explains what’s wrong with them.

The Squad:

Owner:  Mukesh Ambani
Coach: John Wright
Captain: Rohit Sharma
Wicketkeeper: Ambati Rayudu, Ben Dunk, Chidhambaram Gautam, Sushant Marathe, Aditya Tare
Batsmen: Michael Hussey, Jalaj Saxena, Apoorv Wankhade
Allrounders: Corey Anderson, Kieron Pollard
Bowlers: Harbhajan Singh, Lasith Malinga, Zaheer Khan, Pragyan Ojha, Josh Hazlewood, Marchant de Lange, Krishmar Santokie, Jasprit Bumrah, Shreyas, Gopal, Pawan Suyal

SUNRISERS HYDERABAD

Perhaps the weakest team in the IPL despite having Dale Steyn, Ishant Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan, Sunrisers Hyderabad were previously known as Deccan Chargers. But as the former owners sold out and the new owners bought the club, it was thought better to start fresh with a whole new name as well. All the old players from Deccan Chargers were retained for the 2014 season, but the glaring weakness in the batting still persists. The bowling couldn’t be better though, with Dale Steyn, perhaps the best fast bowler of his generation leading the attack.

The Squad:

Owner: Kalanithi Maran (Sun TV channel Network)
Coach: Tom Moody
Captain: Shikhar Dhawan
Wicketkeeper: Brendan Taylor, Naman Ojha, Amit Paunikar
Batsmen: Aaron Finch, David Warner, Srikkanth Anirudha, Manpreet Juneja, Lokesh Rahul, Venugopal Rao
Allrounders: Moises Henriques, Irfan Pathan, Darren Sammy
Bowlers: Dale Steyn, Jason Holder, Amit Mishra, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma, Karn Sharma, Parvez Rasool, Chama Milind, Ashish Reddy, Ricky Bhui, Prasanth Parameswaran
