That this is the most exciting World Cup in history, is now beyond doubt. What is also unquestionable is that the two best football teams in the world – Argentina and Germany – play each other in the grand finale of the World Cup, to be played at the suitably imposing Estadio Maracana, in exotic Rio de Janeiro. Over 79,000 fans will be present at the stadium to hail their heroes and salute the champions. While victory will be the ultimate triumph for both Argentina and Germany, neither side should be disheartened by a defeat, as they have both come really far, and beaten several quality sides to get to where they are. Still, it has been so far a perfect World Cup for both sides, and a victory on July 13 would leave one side on the top of the world.
Lot of questions will be decided on July 13. That Messi is the greatest footballer of his generation is something everybody accepts today. But is Lionel Messi the greatest footballer ever, even greater than Diego Maradona and Pele? He can be, but he has to first win the final for Argentina this Sunday. For Germany, is Thomas Mueller the greatest ever German footballer? Germany has a rich history of some of the greatest footballers such as Franz Beckenbauer, but at the age of 24, Mueller may eclipse all of them and be the greatest ever if he wins the World Cup. Other questions of interest would be, who will win the coveted Fifa Golden Ball award given to the best player of the World Cup, and is Mueller can beat James Rodriguez’s tally of 6 goals to win the Golden Boot.
But there is no questioning the fact that Germany represents the best of European football and Argentina is easily the best team from South America. So apart from being a match between two nations, the final at Rio is also a clash between competing cultures and ideologies. What will win at the end? European discipline? Or South American flair?

Different as they certainly are, both Argentina and Germany have a lot in common with each other. Primarily, they are both winners and have that killer instinct that is so important in sports . Argentina has the best defense in the World Cup with Javier Mascherano as the defensive midfield general organizing his troops from behind. Martin Demichelis and Garay are solid at the back, and in Sergio Romero, Argentina have a great goalkeeper. Up front, Angel Di Maria may be out, but Sergio Aguero is back, and Gonzalo Higuain looks as good as ever. Messi runs the show for sure, and he has some great assistance from high quality players from all over the pitch.
Germans have Mueller leading the front line, assisted by a talented group of young attacking midfielders – Mesut Ozil, Mario Goetze, Andre Schurrle and Toni Kroos. Kroos has been a star for Germany and his career is on the up for sure. Bastian Schweinsteiger and Sami Khedira present a solid midfield, and a defense with Philip Lahm at right back, looks good. Manuel Neuer is without doubt the best goalkeeper of the tournament. There may be a potential weakness in the German central defensive pairing of Jerome Boateng and Mats Hummels, but we will know for sure on Sunday night if the Argentines are able to exploit that.
So both teams are individually well matched and nobody really can predict for sure which way the match will turn out. It is possible that the final at Rio will be a battle of attrition with both sides canceling each other out. Perhaps the scores will be tied and we will have a penalty shootout to decide the World Cup.
But since it is incumbent upon us to make a prediction, we predict a hard fought Argentinean win, but it can really go either way. But we feel that Argentina wants the World Cup a little more than Germany and that winning it would mean a lot more to their country than it ever could to the Germans. So, Argentina to win, because they want it more.
Prediction: 2 – 1 to Argentina after extra time.
