Aston Villa 0 – 0 Newcastle United
Aston Villa and Newcastle United played out a thrilling match, with a plenty of goalmouth action, and so it was a surprise to see the match finish as a draw. Newcastle had the better chances and looked the better side, and should have won quite easily if not for the horrible finishing showing by their players, especially a late chance that fell to débutante Siam de Jong, which he missed so badly. Aston Villa were always second best and were never in the game, giving manager Paul Lambert a plenty to think about. Newcastle, on the other hand, may have won their first point of the season, but are yet to score a goal, and going by their finishing, goals won’t come easily to them this season.

Chelsea 2 – 0 Leicester City
This was the second straight match Jose Mourinho’s fancied team has had to play this season against a newly promoted side, and they took full advantage of the opportunity, emerging as comfortable 2-0 winners, with goals coming from their new Spanish striker Diego Costa and Belgian attacking midfielder Eden Hazard. Hazard’s goal was a treat to watch as he cut down on the left, took the ball on his right foot, and finished with precision, just beyond the goalkeeper. Leicester City shouldn’t be too worried, as it only gets easier for them from here.
Crystal Palace 1 – 0 West Ham
Crystal Palace has been without a manager since their old manager Tony Pulis quit just days before the start of the season, and so it was hardly a surprise to see them succumb to their second successive defeat. The under pressure West Ham manager Sam Allardyce would be heaving a sigh of relief, as his position is under great threat with West Ham supporters clamouring for him to be sacked. Mauro Zarate scored his first goal for his new club West Ham, and it was a spectacular effort. Other goals for the London club were scored by Stewart Downing and Carlton Cole. Crystal Palace were never in the contest.
Southampton 0 – 0 West Brom
Southampton got their first point of the season under new coach Ronald Koeman as they were held to a goalless draw by visitors West Brom. The nearest Southampton came to scoring was when a 25-yard free kick by James Ward-Prowse hit the goal post. Otherwise, both sides fought hard but to little effect. Both West Brom and Southampton will have to fight hard to avoid relegation this season.
Swansea 1 – 0 Burnley
Swansea’s breathtaking start to the new Premiership season continued as they followed up their stunning win last week against Louis Van Gaal’s Manchester United with a comfortable 1 – 0 win against the newly promoted side Burnley. The goal came off a hard low shot by Swansea midfielder Nathan Dyer. The young Swansea manager Garry Monk downplayed his side’s brilliant performance so far, saying: “It’s a fantastic start and great to have six points. It’s the best start we could have had, but we know we are only two games from being on your back and getting dragged down.”
Everton 2 – 2 Arsenal
In what was the most thrilling match of the day, Arsenal came back from two goals behind to hold manager Roberto Martinez’s flying Everton to a draw. Everton were clearly the better side of the two in the first half, getting 2 – 0 ahead with clinical finishing from Seamus Coleman and Steve Naismith. Arsenal looked down and out, but the old fox Arsene Wenger made a brilliant tactical substitution at halftime, replacing the ineffective Alexis Sanchez with Frenchman Olivier Giroud. Suddenly, Arsenal were a much improved side and came back with two late goals, one from Aaron Ramsey in the 83rd minute and one just after the 90th minute by Giroud.
Everton manager Roberto Martinez was understandably disappointed as this was the second time this season in as many matches that his side was held for a draw, blaming his side’s lack of energy in the closing stages of the match. “I was delighted with the performance for 80 minutes. I thought the first half was phenomenal. We looked a real threat and kept Arsenal very quiet.
When you’re in a situation you’re close to three points, you get something to lose, you need composure to get on ball and take advantage of the opposition throwing bodies forward. Today we didn’t have that mental energy.”
