Investec Test Series Player Ratings: England

Alastair Cook:  7/10

England’s captain looked down and out at the end of the Lord’s Test and was on the verge of quitting with the vultures out for him. But then started one of the greatest comebacks in the history of cricket to win the next 3 Tests by completely dominating India. Did well with the bat to make 3 fifties, but was still way below his best.

Sam Robson: 2/10

Started the series well with a half century at Trent Bridge, but since then was easily England’s only misfiring player. Never did anything of note in the last 4 Tests, and with more talented players in County cricket such as Alex Hales gunning for his place, is unlikely to feature in England’s next series. Has to work on his batting technique.

Gary Ballance: 9/10

Was the outstanding batsman for England batting at No.3, position once occupied by Jonathan Trott. Made 503 runs in the series, at an average of 71 with 2 hundreds and 2 fifties. What more could you ask from your No.3? And everybody remembers the spectacular catch he took at the Oval fielding at slip.

Ian Bell: 7/10

Made a spectacular 167 at Southampton to finish with an average of 42. With other batsmen doing the job for England, was never really called upon to do anything special. Had an easy time out there.

Joe Root: 10/10

The baby faced Englishman really loves playing India, against who he has an average of 101. Had a torrid time in Australia, but made up in super fast fashion making 518 runs against India with two tons. Models himself after his captain Alastair Cook, could possibly be the captain himself in the near future.

Moeen Ali: 8/10

Did spectacularly as a bowler, taking 19 wickets, and will never again be considered as a part time spinner. But as a batsman was quite poor. Has to work on his batting, especially against the short ball.

Jos Buttler: 9/10

England have probably found their own version of Adam Gilchrist in Buttler. He is certain to play for a long time for England, but has to work hard on his wicket-keeping. His batting is perfect though. Did well in every innings.

Chris Jordan: 7/10

It’s hard to know what to make of Chris Jordan. Spectacular fielder, decent enough lower order batsman, but as a bowler, lacks in confidence. Picked up a plenty of wickets in the last match, nevertheless.

Chris Woakes: 6/10

Woakes was decent without being great, and really has to step up as a Test cricketer if he is to do well against better sides than India.

Stuart Broad: 9/10

Broad was an ideal foil to his strike partner James Anderson and was a constant threat to Indians. Most Indian batsmen had no idea on how to deal with him. If Anderson didn’t get them out, Broad invariably did. Ended with 19 wickets.

Jimmy Anderson: 10/10

England’s best player and the Man of the Series, who was the single biggest reason behind England’s spectacular success in the last three Tests. Ended with 25 wickets. Completely dominated the Indian batsmen with his outstanding seam bowling. Nobody can bowl better than Jimmy on English wickets and in English conditions. Just brilliant.

Liam Plunkett: 7/10

Bowled with a lot of pace and did well in the limited opportunities that he did get. Has nothing to be ashamed of.

Matt Prior: 1/10

Prior has played for the last time for England and it was sad to see him leave after having played so badly in this series. But clearly looked way past his prime.

Ben Stokes: 4/10

Bowled well and with pace, did well to take seven wickets in the first two Tests. But his batting was abject, to say the least. Played 3 innings, got out for a duck every time. Still, a player for he future and should be persisted with.
